Which dose of haloperidol?

چکیده
Although haloperidol (HAL)has been available as an antipsychotic for over 30 years, controversy still surrounds the appropriate dose in the treatment of psychosis and in particular, schizo phrenia. In practice, high dose HAL (greater than 20 mg/day) continues to be prescribed, despite good reason for not doing so: the incidence of extrapyramidal side-effects (EPSE) is known to be dose-related; and compliance with treatment may be adversely affected by side-effects, especially akathisia and Parkinsonism. High doses of HAL appear to be used for a variety of reasons: the limited sedation produced may result in higher doses being given when it is felt necessary to 'calm' an agitated patient; doses

Turmeric active substance, curcumin, enhanced apomorphine-induced yawning in rats
Objective: Curcumin is a major constituent of turmeric and influences many functions of the brain. In the present study, we investigated the effect of curcumin on yawning induced by apomorphine in rats. Materials and Methods: Curcumin administered orallyfor 10 consecutive days. Yawning was induced by subcutaneous (s.c.) injection of apomorphine (a dopamine receptor agonist) and the number of ya...

Abstract: purpose: Delirium is change in consciousness and ability to focus and attention . it is reducing costs and increasing the time patients stay in hospital . While sedative and hypnotic drugs reduce pain and anxiety , but according to sources , it is one of the risk factors of delirium . Haloperidol because of low anticholinergic activity and low drug interactions and metabolites hav...
متن کاملHaloperidol disrupts opioid-antinociceptive tolerance and physical dependence.
Previous studies from our laboratory and others have implicated a critical role of Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) in opioid tolerance and dependence. Translational research targeting the CaMKII pathway is challenging, if not impossible, because of a lack of selective inhibitors. We discovered in a preliminary study that haloperidol, a butyrophenone antipsychotic drug, in...
متن کاملParkinson's Disease: Low-Dose Haloperidol Increases Dopamine Receptor Sensitivity and Clinical Response
Background. It is known that ultra-low doses of haloperidol can cause dopamine supersensitivity of dopamine D2 receptors and related behaviour in animals. Objective. The objective was to determine whether a daily ultra-low dose of 40 micrograms of haloperidol could enhance the clinical action of levodopa in Parkinson's disease patients. Method. While continuing their daily treatment with levodo...
متن کاملThe Selective Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibitor, the Compound 11b Improves Haloperidol Induced Catatonia by Enhancing the Striatum Dopaminergic Neurotransmission
A substantial amount of evidence has proposed an important role for Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) enzyme in brain diseases and affiliate disorders. The purpose of this research was studying the effects of COX-2 selective inhibition on haloperidol-induced catatonia in an animal model of drug overdose and Parkinson’s disease (PD). In this study, the effect of acute and Sub-chronic oral administration ...
متن کاملSelective Cyclooxygenase-2 Inhibitor Compound 11b Improves Haloperidol-Induced Catatonia by Enhancing the Striatum Dopaminergic Neurotransmission
The aim of this research was to investigate the Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) selective inhibition effect on haloperidol-induced catatonia. In this study, the effect of orally, acutely and Sub-chronically administrations of compound 11b [1-(phenyl)-5-(4-methylsulfonylphenyl)-2-ethylthioimidazole] (2, 4 and 8 mg/kg), a newly selective COX-2 inhibitor, was investigated against the haloperidol-induced ...
